    Our History and Traditions About History In 1834, only three years after the founding of Lahainaluna, its principal, Lorrin Andrews, started a student-run newspaper called Ka Lama Hawaii , or “The Hawaiian Luminary.” The paper’s first issue explained the importance of knowledge. “In enlightened lands,” wrote its editorial staff, “it is believed that the spreading of knowledge is a good thing. When wise people ponder and come upon good new thoughts not known before […] they then desire to disseminate it abroad, and not hide it, so that all men may know” (61). Andrews narrowed Ka Lama ’s purpose to three goals. The first was to “give the scholars of the High School the idea of a newspaper [and] to show them how information of various kinds was circulated through the medium of a periodical.” The second goal was, generally, “to communicate to them [students] ideas on many objects.” Thirdly, it was designed as a “channel through which the scholars might communicate their own opinions freely on any subject they chose" (Qtd in Silva 109). Almost two centuries later, Lahainaluna’s current principal, Richard Carosso, sees Ka Lama as a space where students are “discussing among yourselves,” or where student voice is amplified. “It’s one of our only resources for students to voice their opinions and to get the input from, you know, their classmates about what's going on at school,” said Carosso, adding that the paper also brings student voices to the school’s administration so the school’s leadership “can tell what matters to you guys.” Historians remark that the original Ka Lama was mostly a way to send messages from missionary leaders to students; in 2025, it does the opposite. Both then and now, however, Ka Lama Hawai’i has encouraged discussion and literacy on campus while letting students engage with unfamiliar topics...   • Ariel Pakela Cabrera | Ka Lama Hawaiʻi

    < Back Ariel Pakela Cabrera Custodial Staff Ariel Pakela Cabrera is part of the custodial family at Lahainaluna. Soft-spoken and caring, Pakela, as he’s called, is a former Lahainaluna student who ensures the school grounds and classrooms are clean and that the environment is conducive to learning. One of his favorite memories from Lahainaluna is the lip sync battles. “Our class was pretty good, but we still lost to the seniors,” he laughed, adding that the seniors always seem to win due to their experience. Pakela has fond memories of the teachers at Lahainaluna. “The teachers made it fun. They were lenient but also made sure you got your work done and earned good grades,” he said. He recalled having good grades, with his highest GPA being around 3.6. “I was a naughty boy, but I did my work,” he admitted. Despite being a handful, he managed to complete his assignments and graduate. He reminisced about his freshman year, describing how large the school felt compared to the intermediate school. “I got lost all day. At one point, I sat in a class for about 10 minutes and wasn’t even supposed to be there,” he laughed, noting that the teacher didn’t notice his mistake. The most challenging part of Pakela’s job is dealing with “naughty kids” who create messes or graffiti. Additionally, he finds cutting and maintaining the grass to be a tedious task. Cleaning the cafeteria is also important to him, as he believes “kids need a clean environment to eat in.” Before the birth of his one-year-old daughter, Pakela enjoyed fishing for octopus and riding his dirt bike on weekends. Now, he prefers to spend time with her, saying, “I like to spend time with her the most.” He noted that, like him, his daughter is a handful. Pakela’s goal in life is to provide for his family. Pakela's message to Lahainaluna students is to “enjoy your high school years. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. There is no going back, only forward. So make the most of your high school years.” He explained that in high school, students don’t have to worry about adult responsibilities. “With school, you can miss a day or two, but with work, you gotta go to work.” His hope for Lahainaluna is to see “all the kids enjoying life and finishing off strong.” “This is mainly why we do it,” he said, referring to himself and the other staff on campus. “We do it for the kids here.” Trinity Guiza is a staff writer at Ka Lama Hawai'i.

    < Back The Fair is Back Remembering the Past, Facing the Future Grayson Guzman Arts and Entertainment September 30, 2025 at 9:57:43 PM Lunas past and present are excited for the fair, echoing the sentiment of the Maui County Fair website: “it’s more than a fair—it’s where memories are made and community comes alive.” “When I first walk in, I just see, like, so much familiar faces, and then I see everyone smiling, and I just see a lot of kids having fun, and the community just enjoying themselves,” sophomore Kyrah Pagdilao reminisced, remembering Maui County Fair as an elementary student. Back in 2019, the Maui County Fair drew crowds of tens of thousands of people. Students and staff recalled nostalgic memories like racing down the giant, bright pink, green, and yellow illuminated slides on squishy blue mats, and eating fair foods like flying saucers, funnel cake, cotton candy, fried Oreo’s with ice cream, and popcorn. The wave swinger took them up over the whole fair ground. Sophomore Romie-Lynn Santos remembers riding the Zipper and “hearing, like, all the people screaming and having fun and that thing. And I remember the ride, like, dropping and moving around and all the lights that would flick around it.” “Carnival games and the lights, the lights, the flashy lights!” said senior Lation Pascual. “Screaming, laughter, the sound of games being won. A lot of laughter, a lot of fun.” The fair “was a core memory for me,” said Pascual. “I'm excited that it's back.” It has been six years since people in Maui have gotten to experience the sense of community the fair has brought. Now it is set to open this Thursday, from October 2-5th, 2025 at the War Memorial. “...a core memory…” For many alumni, Luna identity is tied to the fair and their participation in it. Rides, food, games, family and community connections, the parade and more have shaped our students' earliest memories. The fair had “a pretty big impact, honestly,” said senior Jean Alternado who has been in marching band since he was a freshman. Alternado claims that he originally joined because of the fair–after seeing the band in the opening day parade. “That kind of motivated me to join as a musician,” he said. The fair also meant maturity and independence for Alternado who feels like “it made me grow up to not be shy because my parents would usually let me go by myself. And then I would interact with people.” For Pagdilao, the fair embodies community. She remembers “a booth that we had, like one of our family friends, they had a booth and it was just like their whole family helping and like, yeah.” “The Fair has always been a happy place,” said former Student Activities Coordinator, Art Fillazar. It was “like our version of Disneyland but only for the weekend.” “It was the one time we actually had an amusement park,” said Stephanie Rubio Aguire who remembers going with her family in 2019 before its closure. “It wasn't really an amusement park, but it felt like it for me.” Sophomore Jade Cabanila thinks the fair was “a place where you actually got to experience a carnival, especially over here. Not a lot of big, amusement kind parks happen here. So the fair is kind of like a place where it's here and you don't have to spend as much money to go to, like these big amusement parks. It's like a home amusement park.” Kaizan Munemitsu, a freshman, remembers that “it was fun, you know. It made me happy, just, being able to play games, have fun with my family, all that stuff.” “‘We are Lahainaluna and we were proud of it!” This year will mark the 98th year the fair has run. The first ever Maui Fair took place on November 30th, 1916. Since then the fair has been interrupted three times by global events. The fair was paused and cancelled due to both World War I and World War II from 1917-1918 and 1942-1946 respectively. Along with the Covid-19 pandemic, it was not held until this year. In years past, the Lahainaluna community did not only attend the fair. They often participated in it. According to Fillazar, now the Executive Director of the Lahainaluna High School Foundation, staff and students were part of the parade (as Marching and Pep Band, Cheerleaders) and, “on several occasions” he said, submitted to various exhibits. Submissions included student artwork, AG displays, and other things. “FFA members may have also been volunteers with the livestock display,” Fillazar thought. “It was definitely the spirit competitions,” said Ms. Kristy Arakawa, the Early college coordinator about the importance of the fair to Lahainaluna staff and students. Running from 1986-1996, the School Spirit Competition was apparently dominated by our school. Lunas Win 10th Straight Spirit Championship “October 5, 1996 marked the 10th consecutive year that Lahainaluna High School captured the School Spirit Competition trophy” wrote Jana Baybado in Ka Leo Luna , our school’s third newspaper: From the LHS version of the ‘Macarena’ to the chant that is sung after touchdowns– THIS WAS THE YEAR FOR LAHAINALUNA TO SHINE! Some secret weapons used were: ‘Knock You Out’ and ‘1,2,3,4,!’, hand-held torches, and a large banner that popped up at the end featuring the school motto and the words ‘ IMUA LUNAS’ in big bold letters. All of the students who attended the competition wore either red or white tops represented the school’s colors. Those wearing red formed an ‘L’ that stood out in the crowd of white. Traditionally the Lunas waved ti leaves, red pom poms, and held numerous signs to show their spirit. With these spirit boosters plus all of the people who attended the competition, the Lunas were able to bring back the trophy that first made its home here nine years ago. Congratulations Lahainaluna High School–You are #1 in spirit!! Reflecting on this moment, Fillazar added that “LHS always had the true spirit and desire. “As students we took pride in our first-place wins,” said Ginny Yasutake, College and Career Counselor. “The massive crowds, matching shirts, and handmade signs weren't just about winning; they were a powerful declaration that “We are Lahainaluna and we were proud of it!” “The moment we won the School Spirit Competition my senior year of high school–” said Arakawa with meaning. “--no class wants to be the class that loses the School Spirit Competition for Lahainaluna so we literally left our voices in that tent–We were all hoarse after that, but it was worth it.” Jalen Baraoidan (Mr. B), the Lahainaluna Band and Choir Director, remembers the fair when he participated as a student. “For the parade, you know, the marchers would always participate and always behind the marchers would always be our cheerleaders. So I guess just having the representatives of our school representing in the county fair was always cool. It's just being able to represent the west side in the county fair, which is so, like Central Maui oriented. So I'm just getting to represent West Maui.” According to Kristina Meguro, a second year member in the marching band, says the marching band was supposed to participate in the parade. Yet, as it was “last minute and confusing, we (the marching band) did not have enough time to prepare. Especially since we have a complicated show to work with this year.” “...in the process of rebuilding…” For some students like Marc Ruiz, a freshman, this will be his first time going to the fair. “What I heard about it was that there's like, a lot of activities, there's a lot of food, a lot of people. There's a lot of rides. It's fun. Okay, sounds fun.” Ruiz says that he only knows the fair from Instagram and his friends' stories. Yet, there is a chance that newcomers to the fair do not get to share that experience that previous students did as families are now facing economic stress from many directions. Yasutake seems to worry a little about the newest generation of fairgoers when she thinks about its most recent instance. “The fair has become so expensive that you have to really think about your finances and if you can afford it,” she said. Our recent struggles, specifically, rising inflation made worse by fallout from the 2023 Lahaina Wildfire, give her even more cause for concern. “The rising cost to attend is a significant concern for many families, like mine, that are in the process of rebuilding their home.” “For its return after a six year absence and with the economy the way it is, I’m not sure how it will ‘fair’,” says Fillazar. “It has always been a challenge with the high expenses.” Junior Makayla-Yuen Barroga sees the fair’s arrival as a solution to tragedy, however. “It's bringing a community back together after the fire happened and letting people have, like, such a good time.” For Baraoidan, the legacy of the Maui County Fair is “something different that we have to offer. I think that still plays into it just because when people announce that the county fair is coming back, like a lot of people were really, really excited, really excited. And I don't know if the kids, like, people in high school now even got to experience a county fair.     < Back 54.1 Percent Say "No" Lahainaluna on the Santa Kristina Meguro Arts and Entertainment December 3, 2025 at 6:00:53 PM Do you believe in Santa Claus? Damon Nieves, a senior at Lahainaluna, does. He allegedly “received a personal letter from Saint Nick himself, along with presents containing the things I asked for, all saying ‘From Santa Claus.’”. That, claimed Nieves, is “proof that Santa is real, because why would anybody else give me presents and not take the credit?” Other students were asked the same question, and I was met with a variety of answers. There were answers such as “Yes, I believe in Santa Claus, he gives me presents” to “No, I don’t believe in Santa Claus…whoever believes in him is childish.” But what does the majority of Lahainaluna think? Do they or do they not believe in Santa? This month 74 members of Lahainaluna, 9 staff members (12.2 percent) and 65 students across grade levels (87.8 percent), responded to a survey asking a series of questions about why they do or do not believe in Santa. After 6-7 days, results revealed that 54.1 percent of respondents does not believe in Santa, while 45.9 percent do. The largest group of respondents were freshman with 27 percent of total responses and juniors second with 23 percent of total responses. Several voices from the non-believers accept the fact that “Santa is not real.” Yet, their responses suggest that they still choose to feed the belief for younger kids. Santa is either a legend or just a symbol. For this reason, some students believe that Santa is a representation of Saint Nicholas who seasonally “gave” his wealth to the poor. Aukai Dean-Kobatake, a freshman, says “Santa Claus, the character himself, does not exist, along with his sleigh or reindeer. However the origins, representations, and tradition of him are real…” 52 percent of believers in Santa Claus say they experienced Santa coming to their home. Their evidence: prepared cookies disappeared by morning, carrots eaten by reindeers, and sleigh bells jingling, etc. Some students argued that what is most important is the meaning of Santa to Christmas and, connected to that, the meaning of Christmas generally. “Christmas isn’t about Santa and presents but instead about the birth of Jesus Christ!” says anonymous junior, Vixen. Comet, a freshman, thinks itʻs the other way around. “Without Santa Claus,” they said, “there would be no staple mascot of Christmas–other than Jesus Christ.” Other student’s revealed that they got their beliefs from their parents/guardians. Prancer, a freshman, explained that they don’t believe in Santa because their parents “always told me it (Santa Claus) was fake and to stop believing in fairytales…they wrapped presents in front of me so I knew he was fake.” Similarly, Coleman Riddell, another senior at Lahainaluna, recalls when his parents broke the news to him when he was younger. “Betrayal” said Riddell, though he followed up with the wish that he had known that it was his mother who had put in the effort, selflessly buying gifts and working to make the holidays special. “At least I can thank her now,” he added. “Ignorance is bliss, I wish I still believed.” It’s not a surprise that people wouldn’t believe in Santa due to how their family might have not celebrated the holiday. “I stopped believing due to never really sincerely celebrating the holiday,” said Donner, a junior, whose family never celebrated the holiday. Jean-Martin Alternado, a senior, says, “it was always common to address the gift from who it came from rather than addressing it from Santa.” The non-believers, based on the survey, tend to be more logical. They have solid evidence as to why they don’t believe. Believers tend to be more thoughtful. They refer often to the need to keep the Christmas spirit alive or for their younger siblings. “I don’t believe in Santa because I truly never heard of a real sighting or a realistic story that associates with him…” says Crissa-ann Bumagat, a freshman. The majority of the non-believers at Lahainaluna said that Santa is not real. Dean-Kobatake agrees. “Santa Claus is a myth in the Christmas holiday that parents use,” he said, “as an alibi on where their children's presents are from.” “Think of it as the Easter Bunny” he added. “They are both the mascot of their respective holidays but everyone knows they don’t really exist. There are multiple accounts, (including myself) of children finding out that their parents are responsible for making their presents.” Cupid, a senior, supports Dean-Kobatake’s argument. “I once saw my parents put the presents under the tree. Then I knew that the belief, Santa, was just to keep me good.” Some other non-believers, such as Dancer, a senior, says “I grew up receiving Christmas presents from ‘Santa’ with my parents’ handwriting and wrapping paper.” Other non-believers say their peers are the reason why they no longer believe in Santa Claus. Eli Hegrenes, a sophomore, explains how he used to believe in Santa when he “was in school in like 5th grade.” Hegrenes recalls admitting to his classmates that he believed: “I looked schizophrenic. I was laughed at and just chose to stop believing.” “His body couldn’t possibly process so many calories at once (cookies and milk) and delivering presents to billions of children around the world in one night is pretty much impossible,” said senior, Ari Abut. Santa is just an illogical part of the holiday entertainment she argued. Ceramics teacher, Daniel Schultz, thinks Santa has a specific and useful purpose. “Santa Claus is an American version of an idea that supports generosity and giving.” Trevor Giligan, a history teacher and AP world professor, describes the tragic story of finding his Christmas present. As a child, he snooped around before Christmas. On one occasion he found the “Creepy Crawlers Workshop” in the attic where he was not allowed to go to. And on Christmas day, he found that present under the tree labeled “from Santa Claus.” Giligan’s childhood innocence disappeared that day. “Ignorance is bliss,” he concluded. “I wish I still believed.” "Because Iʻm a kid" “I left cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve, and the next day…there was a bite in the cookie!” says sophomore Gisele Miller. Similarly, Jeremy Langaman, a junior, swears that he “heard the bells” one Christmas. Heading out to the living room, he found missing cookies and presents under the tree. Senior Alicia Saia left carrots out that had been “scattered on the floor” or eaten by reindeer the next morning. She also found presents from Santa under the tree. Mari Finn, the school’s technology coordinator, shared her story about her belief in Santa Claus, “...me and my brother would stay up…we'd have family parties, so, we tried to stay up, and we would fall asleep on these couches to wait for Santa. And we would never catch Santa, ever. We'd wake up like, ‘Oh, my God, Santa came already!’ And we literally was right next to the Christmas tree. It was a fun memory of being a kid.” Like many students, the holiday season in my household was a time to set up cookies and milk for Santa. I guess this means we were believers. In the past, whenever my brother and I wouldn’t cooperate with our parents, we were told that “Santa Claus wouldn’t give presents to naughty kids who don’t go to bed.” There was also, “You’ll only get a lump of coal if he catches you awake!” Now that I’m older, my parents have told me that Santa isn’t real. But I donʻt feel betrayed. I, personally, like to believe in Santa because it’s a fun part of the holidays. In fact, Christmas would be kind of boring without Santa Claus. There would be no jolly old man you’d be preparing cookies for. Am I the only one who enjoyed baking cookies with my family? There would be no mall santa you would go to ask for a present. Without Santa Claus, you wouldn’t be entertained by the number of kids being scared by the mall santa that’s supposed to impersonate a jolly old man with a hearty laugh. John Borge, a history teacher, got a little more philosophical. “If something real is something we can prove based on physiological response,” he said, “then yes he (Santa Claus) is real. If you define what is real by what is tangible, then love does not exist and can't possible be real” (sic). “It’s important to believe in Santa because it keeps the holiday feeling fun and meaningful,” said Caselyn Ribac, a junior. “The belief brings people together, encourages kindness, and protects the happiness and imagination that make childhood special. It adds joy and keeps the magic of Christmas alive.” Freshman Alexa Perminova was a little more straightforward.   • Kawehi Kaina | Ka Lama Hawaiʻi

    < Back Kawehi Kaina Custodial Staff Daven Kaina, or Kawehi, as he is called, is one of six custodians at Lahainaluna High School where he has worked for almost two years. He is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet, and always has a smile on his face. Behind this genuine smile, I learned that he is a man of faith. When Kawehi is not at work, he is helping out at his church with the youth. He is very passionate about helping the next generation thrive and is working towards becoming a youth pastor. In fact, the best part of his job, he said, is being able to connect with teenagers. He loves that he can “be God’s light in the school environment.” The worst part of Kawehi’s job, in his opinion, is the pay. But this doesn’t dim his passion for what he does. Kawehi loves his job at Lahainaluna High School and says his “mental state is thriving”. I asked Kawehi about the craziest thing he had seen in the campus bathrooms. He told me about how the custodians had to call a plumber because the toilets weren’t flushing properly and when “the plumber took out the toilet, and at the bottom where everything leaves the toilet, there were four vapes tetris'd together clogging the pipe.” At this time, all the schools on Maui were dealing with this issue, “but Lahainaluna won for having the most vapes clogging the toilet at one time.” The job is more than this kind of thing, however. As Kawehi sees it, his work is about “creating an atmosphere that people feel welcome in.” Of course, this includes cleaning and restocking the bathrooms, cleaning the classrooms, and beautifying the plants around campus. But it also means making the school a safer and more welcoming environment to be in. Kawehi loves his job at Lahainaluna, but he didn’t always see it as his future. When he was a teenager, he attended Lahainaluna and claims to have been “the naughtiest kid in school.” In high school, Kawehi wanted to be a Fireman. Custodian or fireman, Kawehi has always felt called to “service.” When Kawehi sees kids not in class, he has to tell them to get to class. Yet, as the former “naughtiest kid in school,” he sometimes feels “hypocritical.” Afterall, “I was the same way when I was in high school.” Yet, he does his job, he explained, because he just doesn’t want people making the same mistakes he did. When he skipped his classes as a teenager he knew all the best hiding spots for ditching. “Sometimes I’ll drive by those spots in my golf cart and just laugh to myself,” he said.     < Back "Smart and Capable" Raising the Academic Bar at Lahainaluna Keyla Jimenez Education December 3, 2025 at 6:39:19 PM Academically, Lahainaluna has its opportunities. From our dual credit classes, associates degree program, and AP courses, our students have access to greater academic challenges. Yet, like many schools, the majority is caught between catching up while others are falling behind. Some students feel like they are not being challenged. “I have an A in most of my classes, but sometimes I feel like I still don't understand what is being taught to me,” states one anonymous junior. Others feel differently, as one anonymous sophomore says “I’m failing second quarter because I don’t know what I’m doing in this class.” Summing up her frustrations, she states “If you don’t get it, good luck.” It's not a new problem, but it's taking a toll on Lahainaluna students. How do we maintain an environment for those already ahead to keep learning, while supporting those who need to catch up? The problem here lies in underestimating students. "Soft bigotry..." When we underestimate what students can achieve we prevent potential learning. As chemistry teacher Kaitlyn Scheib explains, we should “think more highly of students, because I think they are smart and capable.” The principal, she says, “has been telling all the teachers that we need to have more rigorous expectations of students this year.” This has proven benefits. As author as A.J. Hill and D.B. Jones found in a 2021 study, higher expectations in instruction were linked to higher test scores. The discussion is often connected to something George W. Bush said in a 2000 speech to the NAACP in which he criticized those who say “it is unfair to hold disadvantaged children to rigorous standards.” Against this, he argued, “it is discrimination to require anything less—the soft bigotry of low expectations.” We can accommodate those having a difficult time, but it must be considered how students, in the long run, will benefit from it. As Scheib and others suggest, these expectations have shown to affect student attitudes towards their education. Junior Corbin Sales says that “when it comes to standards, I feel like at this point, teachers care more about whether or not they actually do it, instead of actually taking the time and looking at each person's work.” One anonymous Junior admits that “when I don't understand topics that I feel are easy, I do feel behind or that I'm not learning enough.” She reflects on how, as high school students, “we're almost adults, and we're almost getting to college.” “I feel like we should be held to higher expectations,” she said. Students have come to seek higher expectations themselves. They’ve found signing up for courses that ask more from them beneficial. Eli Hegrenes explains how it benefitted him, stating that “the only classes that give me a real challenge are my AP and college courses.” He adds how “compared to my normal high school classes they are much more challenging and make me think in ways I haven’t before.” When asked what low expectations do, he noted how “the standard should be higher” and how he supports “the idea of giving credit for effort, but if someone didn’t even try but still did it and is getting the same grade as an academically motivated student, then I think that's unfair.” “I think my classes are challenging,” said another student, but she says she “knew what I signed up for.” It’s easy to explain how a student can benefit from higher expectations, but there are more factors to consider that hit closer to home. “The riddle for any teacher…”: Social studies teacher John Borge believes that “there are flaws within any educational school,” but that “the riddle for any teacher is, how do I support my low students while preventing my high students from getting bored.” While some gain more from a challenge, academics are not always on the top of a student's mind. Coming back to our anonymous sophomore, deciding if you should take challenging classes “depends on like you and your life outside of school.” “They assign a lot of things. And I feel like that shouldn't be a standard,” one anonymous sophomore said. “A lot of us, do have other things to do outside of school.” She emphasizes that “it's good for the teachers to, like, have empathy for their students.” English teacher Brendan Smith feels that "high school students that are really behind, maybe academically, but also mostly like discipline wise” explaining how “If elementary school didn't have homework, you can't expect the high schoolers to want to do homework.” He adds how “it's also a rural area that's low income, so there were a lot of home issues as well.” “If we can better support families, those families will better support their kids,” Borge offered. “Their kids will show up to school knowing its values.” “Can the system of teachers do better? Absolutely,” Borge concluded. “But everything starts in the home.” Students have found it difficult to catch up, but accommodating to them still leaves them behind. Students are struggling now, so increasing expectations will prove to be difficult, although one student found just giving it a try was enough. “I've been in the associates degree program, for almost about four years… it definitely pushes me” describes senior Cailee Marie Cuaresma who reflected on how she “didn't think I'd excel,” at first. But after some effort in her classes, she did “and I passed them with pretty good grades.” Cuaresma recognizes how even though she’s been able to learn a lot at Lahainaluna, “the teachers, and like the staff in general, should be more strict about receiving F's or receiving even D's” She sums up our issue neatly, stating how “It's also kind of a teacher's job to motivate students, but it's also the students’ job to motivate themselves.” Previous Article Next Article Copy link Keyla Jimenez is a former staff writer for Ka Lama Hawai'i.     < Back You Can't Always Park Where You Want Limited Space, Rising Frustrations, and Calls for Change Jersea Borneman Student Life March 15, 2025 at 6:43:48 PM “This campus was designed before the idea of having so many students and staff,” said Vice Principal Christopher Webber. “As we’ve grown, we just don’t have the infrastructure to accommodate everyone.” To park at Lahainaluna in the paved lot, there are rules. According to Uncle Tommy Akima, all students who park in the upper lot must have a parking pass, which costs fifteen dollars. To get this, they must present their vehicle’s registration, driver’s license, proof of insurance, and school ID. “Without a parking pass you parked on the lower dirt parking lot.” Yet, not every student who has parked on campus has had a pass. Some have parked with much less. Also, recently, parking spaces have become harder to find. Again, the main parking lot is for the drivers who purchase a parking pass. Seniors get priority for parking, but lately this hasn't been happening. “Even though I paid fifteen dollars for my sticker when I get to school sometimes there isn't enough spots,” senior Anuhea Coon said. One reason for this, offered senior Stasia Pililani, is because “a lot of sophomores are getting their licenses, and so then once they get their license, they think that they can park up top.” She thinks this is unfair and that “the freshmans and sophomores need to just stop parking in our parking spots and we'll be fine.” There is currently no requirement for where to park based on grade level. Yet, if all the spots are full, the dirt lot is an alternative. Some students may even choose the dirt lot for other reasons. An anonymous senior admitted that “when I was a sophomore and a freshman and I was driving with no license, I would park down in the dirt because I didn't want to steal a spot—If you don’t have your license you don’t have a spot.” Unlicensed students may be contributing to the fact that the dirt lot, according to some students, has also become full. Junior Giana Pogni offers another reason: “over winter break everybody got cars so now there's like ten times more cars then there were.” Junior Isabella Higgins relates the difficulty of parking now in the dirt lot since “You need to park between a lot of cars and there's usually not a lot of room.” Parking in Restricted Areas Without a pass, students should be in the dirt lot. Yet, Uncle Tommy observes that “nobody wants to park in a dirt parking lot.” Students like Coon have started to find other places to park, such as the gravel area by the portables. She says, “I’ve had to park in the dirt lot and then I've also like resorted to parking in the upper lot. Not like the staff lot but like the upper grass lot.” Vice Principal Webber has noticed students are starting to try to park in the trainers’ lot next to the trainers’ room. This has led them to close off the area. This is not the only off-limits place they are parking. “Students are taking the initiative,” says Webber, “to park just below borders field.” Uncle Tommy has seen students parking in the administration lot as well. Japanese teacher David Esselburn says that sometimes when he goes up to the library during the day, he “will see student vehicles up there.” More Cars, More Problems “It’s hectic to go out of the parking lot,” says Isabella Higgins. Webber thinks a reason for this is because “You’ll be in line trying to get out and some people will just cut in front of you.” “We don’t actually have assigned parking spaces,” Webber notes. “So the way that students park may be sort of haphazard and that might make it difficult for some kids to get in and out as well.” Junior Higgins thinks, “We need to expand the parking lot to get more parking so everyone can fit.” To this, Webber notes that “we cannot magically make more parking spaces on campus,” but he thinks that “maybe we can designate proper like parking spaces, chalk out some lines, and maybe that will have people park more orderly so that we can fit people in better.” There was a time at our school when we had this. Webber recalls, “Two or three years ago we had designated spots for each student in the student lot.
